Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was raised in Long Beach California. DuVernay was instilled with the desire to explore her love of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a child. Her aunt was a nurse working night shifts to ensure she could spend the day to literature, art, theater and other interests. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be an instrument for social activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially conscious and taught her to say something through art. Though DuVernay was raised in Compton and with her extended family, she was a summer resident with her family in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the iconic civil rights demonstration across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Selma, Alabama was the inspiration she used to write a movie about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay was a student at University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she was awarded certificates in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the home and looking through the garbage of one of jurors. Her disappointment was evident in her journalism tasks and decided that she would switch to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her work working as a junior press assistant at a tiny film studio following her graduation from college. She launched in 1999 her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Aside from PR, her agency also created a variety of promotions and lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
